THE GOOD NEWS
March
2007
God of all peoples, You are our aloha, our wholeness, our love, our
peace. You call us into your Church to speak many
languages in one voice: Adentro de tú Spiritu Santo nos juntamos. (Through your Holy Spirit we are gathered.) Wir sind gesegnet durch den Heiligen Geist. (Through your Holy Spirit we are blessed.) Ua tasi i tatou e ala i Lou Agaga Paia. (Through your Holy Spirit we become one.) Shine, God’s People of all races, cultures and
nations Light a candle Hear our praise to you — united in the one
language of the heart. Lift our hearts into your shining love. Release our fears. Transform our timidity. Make us into people of your extravagant
hospitality. Open our arms.
Expand our hopes toward your vision for tomorrow. God of all peoples, You are our aloha, our wholeness,
our love, our peace. In Christ, we are sisters and brothers. Gloria a Dios! Ho’omaikalia hoi ke Akua! Salamat sa Diyos! Thanks be to God! Amen. The above prayer comes from
the multitude of materials available in this 50th year of our denomination. What a treasure we have! What a treasure we are! Please join us as we look
back and look ahead. We have such
history and potential. Please pray
for our Parkway church and our United Church of Christ as we renew our
covenant and commitment. Peace,
Kevin PARKWAY

death of Dieterich Buxtehude
(1637-1707), organist in the north German city of Lűbeck, and one of the finest German composers of the
17th century. Parkway’s
choir will mark the
anniversary by performing his cantata Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in
Thy Word at the 9:30 service on Sunday, March 11. The cantata is a setting of a hymn by
Martin Luther, and its prayers for
steadfastness, peace, and good government are as meaningful now as they were in
the 16th and 17th centuries. Violinists Judy Lindquist and Cynthia Bowermaster will join the
choir in performing this beautiful work. CHOIR
CALL If you enjoy singing but can’t make a regular commitment to the choir, why
not join us for Holy Week and Easter?
We will present special music on Palm Sunday, April 1; Good Friday,
April 6; and Easter, April 8. If you
would like to sing with us, please contact Barbara Raedeke, BRaedeke@aol.com.
You are most welcome! SONGS

concert. Handicap accessible. PUCC seminarian in care student, Mauri
Peaco, is one of the speakers. PRAYER CORNER - an opportunity to pray with someone
Have you spent time praying in the Prayer Corner of the
sanctuary? It was dedicated a year ago and is available for
you anytime. Our current prayer list,
prayer books, prayer journal, a kneeler and chair, and a perpetual candle are
there as well. Please help us to
become a more prayerful community when we are here and out in the world. Amen! If you would like
to pray with someone, Kevin Cameron
will be in the Prayer Corner on
Thursday, March 15th between 12:30
p.m.. - 2:30 p.m. CHRISTIAN SERVICES COMMISSION Christian Services Commission would like to share this letter with
you. It affirms the commitment we all share to mission and
stewardship. Richard Simonson volunteers time in a food pantry in
the city several times a month. I have edited his letter for space. Thought it might be of interest to you
to share my experience at Epiphany Food
Pantry. The most impressive thing has been meeting face to face
the variety of people who come
in. Mornings bring in 28 to 35 families to pick up
groceries. We see the homeless, grizzly and weather beaten;
single parents with lots of children; families in all shapes and sizes. Folks can come in once a month for
groceries, including fresh meat, canned goods, milk, bakery
goods, fruit and vegetables. I asked the executive director
what item they had the most demand for and her response was peanut butter and
cereal. Florence and I have decided that once a month we will
provide one of those. I have been impressed with the way the pantry
handles the folks that come in. There is a careful screening process
and procedures they maintain. I am finding it a privilege to work there. It
has given me a new appreciation for all that we have. Regards,
Dick Simonson FABULOUS AT FIFTY - THE UNITED CHURCH

so they know where people’s gifts, interests and skills are as they
begin to think about our ministry in the future. (They also use some of this
information as they work to nominate commission, committee and Council
members for the 2007-2008 program year which begins on June 1, 2007.) We have approximately 34 slots to fill

Orleans recently as part of a group
under the auspices of the UCC Hurricane Disaster Recovery team and found heartbreaking scenes that
challenge them yet today. They wanted to 'build' but found themselves
doing 'first things first' -- cleaning up the storm ravaged areas in east New
Orleans and in Chalmette, hard-hit areas that still manifest great
need. Their charitable effort, along with former PUCC Pastor Krista
Betz and other MMSUCC ministers, is an experience they will never forget. Tom
and Jeremy will present their illustrated story using slides and a DVD and
words of recollection for those who attend the PUCC Men's
Breakfast group on Wednesday, March 21 at 7:30am in the Heritage
Room at the church. Mark your calendar now for a memorable session with
old and new friends, and bring a guest if you wish. No reservations are necessary but a $5.00
donation is requested to further programs of the church. The coffee will be
hot, the food abundant, the questions will be many, and the morning will fly
by quickly. And remember: all are welcome! Questions? Speak to Bart Coleman - (636) 227-2671 twocolemans53@gmail.com

getting warmer, Palm Sunday is getting closer, and it is time for the annual
Mo-Val work day! Each year on Palm Saturday, Parkway sends a crew of able bodied workers
to Mo-Val to help prepare the camp for the summer. This year that work day is Saturday, March 31. Mo-Val needs you! From general labor and yard work to
skilled labor, carpentry, electrical,
plumbing, etc. there is a lot to be done!
Also– lunch is supplied! It would help MoVal to have an idea of how many work opportunities to
provide. With this in mind, we
encourage all those of you interested in a fun day of hard work for a great
cause to sign up on the sheet on the bulleting board in the Gathering Space.

SCHOOL MISSION Our Sunday School children always appreciate the lessons they learn as
they work in mission with others.
This year, the mission dear to their hearts is Heifer Project. Heifer Project International is an organization that provides livestock
to people in the US and
underdeveloped countries, for food purposes and to help farm the land. The gifts of Heifer Project are truly
gifts that keep on giving; for the animals reproduce, providing the needy
families with more livestock for sustenance in the future. Each Sunday, the children of our Sunday School have an opportunity to
give their money to support this cause.
Our goal is to collect $1000 by the end of the year, May 27,
2007. So far we have collected over
$500! You can keep track by checking
the bulletin board in the Education wing and counting the cows in the field! Help our children reach their goal by encouraging them to participate in
this mission work. What a great
lesson in stewardship this is, giving to Heifer Project! (Parkway friends Tony and Katherine Hotle have had lots of experience
working with HPI on the receiving end of the livestock! They will talk with us about this soon!) VACATION
BIBLE SCHOOL– LIFT OFF! July 22-26 The summer is filling up fast!
Don’t forget to keep God in your summer plans! Our Vacation Bible School this summer is a
great way to lift off with your faith journeys in our VBS program LIFT
OFF! That’s right, the theme this year is LIFT OFF! and we will be
encouraging all participants
to let their faith soar! Just like
the colorful hot air balloons that will soon be seen drifting through the sky
all summer long, we have the opportunity to let our faith soar just as high,
bringing joy and delight to the world, just like the balloons we love to
watch soar. You will soon be seeing hot air balloons all over the Parkway UCC
facility as this Vacation Bible School adventure is anticipated. Mark your calendars now to come and let
your faith soar with us! LIFT OFF!
will kick off at
6:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 22, in the Gathering Space with some awesome songs
and movements. The children will
rotate through four workshops, and end the evening at 8:00 p.m. The program will run through Thursday
night, when we will have a potluck dinner for all. But wait! There is more! There will also be an Adult Education opportunity running
concurrent with the kids program. Plan
on attending! Join us for LIFT

our calendars are not broken.
New Beginnings
Sunday is coming up! This year,
New Beginnings Sunday is Sunday, June 3, 2007! Now that our Sunday School is in session all year, and
since the public schools are starting so early, it does not make sense
anymore for our children to wait until the
middle of September to advance to the next grade level. So starting this year, our Sunday School
will begin its new year and new rotations the first Sunday of June. This year, June 3 is New Beginnings
Sunday! The Christian Education Commission has been working on
scheduling and talking about this for some time. We believe this will be the most suitable arrangement for our
children, and it will help us to emphasize that our relationship with God
does not stop in the summer. Watch

EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES The
Middle East in Conflict March 4 9:30 & 11:00 Dr.
Michael Kinnamon is the Alan and Dottie Miller Professor of Mission and Peace
at Eden Theological Seminary. He is also
a world-renowned ecumenist, working with groups such as Churches Uniting in
Christ and Interfaith Partnership/Faith
Beyond Walls. He has just
returned from leading a group of Seminary students on a trip to Israel, and
will have much to explore with us
about conflict in that region! Centering Prayer March
11 9:30 & 11:00 In a Marcus Borg's book "The Heart of Christianity" Borg writes about Centering Prayer: “The Christian resource of
contemplative prayer is being rediscovered in our time. One of the most
common forms is called "centering prayer" associated especially with the contemporary
Benedictine monk Thomas Keating. Many churches offer training in
contemplative prayer, and in most areas of the country one can find workshops
on it." Parkway UCC member Dick Simonson has
practiced this form of Prayer, and will
bring one of the leaders of the contemplative prayer movement, Jim
McElroy, to lead our discussion in this session. Jesus:
The Early Years March
18 9:30 & 11:00 Jesus was almost 30 years old when he began his ministry. Why did
he wait so long? What did he say and do during those years? What
was his family life like? Who influenced him during those years?
During this Lenten season, let us gather in the Sunday morning Adult Class,
to explore. The class will be led by
Florence Simonson. La Clinica April
1 9:30 & 11:00 Parkway member Tom Tupper is on the Board of Directors of La Clinica, a
Hispanic health care agency here in St. Louis. Tom will lead us in discussion concerning health issues facing
these, our fellow St. Louisans, as they make this community home. Join him in discussing the opportunities
and challenges La Clinica faces. |
