Scripture: Ps 51:1-17; Matt 6:1-6, 16-21
Message: I Am
Theme: Pondering our own identity as Christians as we go into Lent.

Tuesday evening, I went into the sacristy in the sanctuary and pulled out the zip loc bags of our 2011 palms. I burned them in our driveway. After the ashes cooled off and we added some grape seed oil, they are be ready for tonight’s Ash Wednesday service.

I can easily remember Palm Sunday morning when we gathered for worship last spring. It was a moving morning as we recalled the incredible joy of welcoming Jesus into town. Hopes were heightened. We placed the palms into the cross and sang our bold songs. Then the mood changed as the forces gathered against Jesus and tried to snuff out his life, light and love.

A great deal has happened to each one of us, our families, our church, our country, our world since last spring. As we look back, we know that the Holy has been with us all along. We have celebrated, mourned, wondered and prayed. As we peer ahead, we can trust that God will continue to be with us each day – no matter what – because God’s love and commitment are stronger than we can ever imagine or need.

Ash Wednesday provides us with an opportunity to recognize our humanity and limitations. At the same time, we acknowledge and offer thanks that God is always eager to meet us where we are and take us somewhere new.

We are constantly being offered fresh starts, covenant partnership and abiding peace for the journey.

We hope that you can join us for worship tomorrow night at 7pm. We will sing, reflect on scripture, pray and celebrate the sacrament of communion at our open table. We will focus on the idea that Jesus is both human and divine – as are we. Jesus’ identity will become more and more clear this season. We will work on our own identities as well.

Be looking for a daily devotion each day this Lent.

Please take a minute to think about these lyrics from one of our hymns for Ash Wednesday – written by Rae B. Whitney (1991)

     Sunday’s palms are Wednesdays ashes as another Lent begins;

thus we kneel before the Maker in contrition for our sins.

We have marred baptismal pledges, in rebellion gone astray;

now returning, seek forgiveness; grant us pardon, God, this day!

We have failed to love our neighbors, their offenses to forgive,

have not listened to their troubles, nor have cared just how they live.

We are jealous, proud, impatient, loving over-much our things;

may the yielding of our failings be our Lenten offerings.

We are hasty to judge others, blind to proof of human need;

and our lack of understanding demonstrates our inner greed;

we have wasted earth’s resources; want and suffering we’ve ignored;

come and cleanse us, then restore us; make new hearts within us Lord.

Ash Wednesday

Joel 1:13

“Put on sackcloth and lament, you priests; wail, you ministers of the altar. Come, pass the night in sackcloth, you ministers of God!”

Reflection by Anthony B. Robinson

One year, as the new pastor at First Church, I persuaded the Worship Committee to try an Ash Wednesday service. Since it was a new thing, we decided to sweeten the pot with a concert of African-American spirituals, by a noted local artist, following the service.

His concert got full-page publicity in both city papers. When I got up to lead our first-ever Ash Wednesday service, the sanctuary was packed, mostly with people I had never laid eyes on before. I panicked. “What in the world will they think of this . . . this long confession of sin . . . the imposition of the ashes? Will they think we’ve done a bait-and-switch, ashes instead of concert?” I offered a wordy explanation.

When the time came for the imposition of ashes I wasn’t sure if anyone would come forward. To my astonishment, hundreds did. So many faces were open in hope and anticipation. So many eyes were tear-filled. We made the sign of the cross on forehead after forehead, saying only, “Turn away from your sins and believe the good news of the gospel.”

The sense of God’s presence was palpable.

Why was that? For sure, I don’t know. Touch? Mystery? Risk? Something old and ancient? Something new and strange? Maybe, in spite of all our denials and our attempts at self-justification, we do know we have sinned. And we long for mercy, for forgiveness.

So few words, repeated over and over, like a chant. “Turn away from your sins and believe the good news of the gospel.” Sometimes our many words drown out God’s Word. Often, too many words keep us stuck in our heads when our hearts long for God.

Let this day, this Ash Wednesday, be a day for fewer words all day long. Let it be a day for some stillness, for paying quiet attention to mystery, to beauty, to the sacred.

Prayer: Holy One, into our sorrow and confusion, our brokenness and pride, speak your word of healing and hope, your word of grace. Amen.

The Life of Parkway UCC is Governed By Its Members

Do you feel drawn, called or led to serve Parkway UCC in a particular area?

Our church has eight Commissions which guide the programs and resource ministries of our church. The Congregation elects members to serve on the Commissions. In addition, there are several Committees appointed by the Council. Our church’s preschool is governed by a board composed of church members elected by the Congregation. Elm Lawn Cemetery operates under a separate board of Parkway members.

New this year: BOOK SUNDAY is for adults as well! We have received a grand gift from CBP – Christian Board of Publications – here in St Louis as they prepare to move their offices to another part of town. Todd and Kevin responded to CBP President and Publisher (and PUCCer) Brad Lyons’ generosity and perused many books. The result – they came back to church with four laundry baskets filled with books for adults. These books will be on tables around the Gathering Space on Sunday morning. Open your heart and mind as the Spirit leads you to a book or two. These books are free. If you are so moved, you can add some cash to the fund for youth missions at PUCC… speaking of which …..

“Joyful Noise was a funny, interesting, and exciting movie. It had the perfect amount of religion, mixed with comedy and romance. At times the movie was serious and thought-provoking, and at others it was sweet and funny. This would be a good movie for people of all ages from teens to adults. The singing was amazing and it leaves you singing the songs long after. I highly recommend you see this!” - Kate Bowermaster
